Testament of the Spirit: Paintings by Eduardo Carrillo (Testamento de espiritu: Pinturas de Eduardo Carrillo)
Eduardo Carrillo (1937-1997) was a Los Angeles-born artist, teacher, scholar, and social activist who advanced the recognition and appreciation of Chicano art and culture in California. Whether grounded in the everyday world or infused with magical realism, Carrillo’s art reflects his relationship to his native California and Mexican heritage, as well as his early religious upbringing and respect for European art traditions. The exhibition and this accompanying catalogue highlight the artist’s intimate watercolors, large-scale visionary paintings, and major Los Angeles murals. This fully illustrated bilingual catalogue contains contributions by Philip Brookman, Gilberto Cárdenas, Maureen Davidson, Michael Duncan, Timothy Drescher, Susan Leask, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Tere Romo, and Christina Waters.
